Solar thermal energy production for heating domestic hot water has one of  the quickest payback of any alternative energy system available. Solar thermal is relatively easy to install with common tools and some time. Solar hot water heaters can installed on most houses unlike wind and it is much less expensive than photovoltaic panels.

As energy prices continue to rise it will become increasingly important that we as individuals do what we can to save and produce our own energy.  Solar hot water has common payback periods on self installed units after tax credits are 5-10 years depending upon your cost for electricity or natural gas.  As utility rates go up the payback period will get shorter. Returns of 15% per year on your solar hot water heater are common. Where else can you get 15% on your money for the next 20 years?

The more energy independent we become as individuals the more energy independent the United States will become. It is up to us, we cannot depend on the oil companies or the government. They have been talking about energy independence since the 1970's and look where we are at today.
