Economics of Solar Water Pumping

The economy and reliability of solar electric power makes it a excellent choice for remote water pumping. Solar water pumping has many advantages over windmill water pumps. While the initial cost for solar are similar ( in many cases the cost for solar is less ) to wind over a lifetime the cost for solar is less expensive. Windmills require dedication to maintenance. The gear box must be check periodically either by the rancher or the job must be hired out. While the excitement of climbing a 20, 30 or 40 tower may be a thrill for the younger amongst us, as we age that excitement diminishes substantially. Hiring the maintenance job out is a expense that takes profits out of our pockets. With solar their is no tower to climb, no gear box to check and no regular maintenance.

A windmill is required to work in some of the harshest environments possible. Dust, driving rain, snow,  steady winds, gusty winds, extreme hot and cold. All are very stressful for the moving parts of the windmill and can lead to failure, especially if not properly maintained. Solar works in these environments also but their are no moving parts to maintain or fail.

With solar their is no tower to erect nor a platform to build. In many cases the farmer or rancher can install their own system with no special tools, equipment or special training, and the system can be ready to operate in a day or less by one or two people.

If you have multiple windmills one of our systems can be made portable and when you move your livestock you can move the solar cells, controller and pump ( Jet pump only ) . We have one rancher that is using his one solar set up on up to five wells! In this case the only way to go is solar! Buying one of our solar systems for same or less cost of one windmill you can do multiple wells if you move your livestock from pasture to pasture. With the right setup it is only a matter of minutes to un hook and hook back up. Think of all the maintenance headaches you will save over wind!

Disadvantages of solar, windmill and electric generator water pumping

Solar                                            Wind                                            Generator

Low output on cloudy days High maintenance Needs maintenance
No output at night Costly to repair Inadequate maintenance leads to reduced life
Special tools and skills required for maintenance Auxiliary fuel tank necessary
Seasonal disadvantages Fuel cost fluctuates wildly
Parts can be hard to find Fuel is expensive recurring cost
No wind, no water Noisy
No shut off - wasting water and making muddy area around tank
