4-Step SunPipe Ordering Guide

for SunPipe-9 and SunPipe-13

The following four variables need to be confirmed for any SunPipe order:
1) Pipe Diameter - 2) Pipe Length - 3) Roof Material & Slope - 4) Ceiling Material & Slope.

1) Pipe Diameter:
Choose SunPipe-9 for up to 100 sq.ft. (a 10 X 10 area).
Choose SunPipe-13 for up to 250 sq.ft. (a 16 X 16 or 12 X 20 area).
We recommend SunPipe-13 for all kitchens, even small ones.

2) Pipe Length:
Minimum Pipe Length = "Ceiling to the roof, plus one foot." (measure the long side of the pipe
(relative to roof slope), not the short side, or you may get caught short on pipe.
Cathedral ceiling factors must be considered by adding the appropriate dimension to the pipe length
(ie. 5" for a 5/12 ceiling slope, etc.)).

3) Roof Material & Slope:
For tile, slate, cedar shake, fiberglass, asphalt, built-up (tar) and some metal roofs
between flat and a 6/12 slope, (ie. where the roof drops 6 inches or less per horizontal foot)
SunPipe's standard flashing will work just fine and last 60 years.
If the roof pitch is greater than 6/12 but less than 12/12, the same f lashing in a "steep-roof" configuration is required.
If roof pitch exceeds 12/12, we can provide you a quotation for a custom flashing.
We provide custom flashings and roof curbs frequently for our industrial customers.
We also offer "rubber boot" flashings for metal roofs.
Just let us know the roof material and the slope, and we will select the proper flashing for you.

Special Note About Roof Flashings:
SunPipe's standard and steep-roof flashings are made from .020" G-90 galvanized steel.
BUYER BEWARE!!! There are many grades of "Galvanized" steel. Don't buy garbage!
The hole you're going to put in your roof is a permanent hole. Make sure your flashing is a permanent flashing.

G-90 galvanization is the only grade approved by Underwriter Laboratories because it is highly resistant to corrosion (rust). That is why we use it. The roof flashing included with our SunPipe Kits should last 60+ years.

Many galvanized flashings may look similar to ours but, they may have a G-60, G-30 or, even worse, an "electro-galvanized" treatment, none of which are good enough for us to put our name on. Additionally, our standard roof flashings have leak-proof "rolled seams." Most galvanized flashings have tack-welded seams which require caulk. They work fine for 3 to 6 years, but, as soon as the caulking wears down or dries out, a leak becomes likely.

We reject "one-piece" flashings made from spun aluminum because they are almost 1/4 inch thick. This means flexible shingles will form a little gutter where they rise up and over the flashing base. As rain water comes down the shingles, it will hit the 'gutter' and, over time, ruin the shingle.

Some daylight-pipe manufacturers sell plastic roof flashings. The Sun Pipe Company has never seen a plastic flashing that we believe will survive outdoor elements for more than 6 years. We, therefore, don't use them.

If we're serious about manufacturing a high-quality, energy saving product, we couldn't very well sell you a temporary flashing to cover a permanent roof hole.

SunPipeŽ roof flashings are industrial-grade flashings. You will never have a problem with them.
Again, insist on the original SunPipeŽ brand daylight-pipe for superior trouble-free quality.

4) Ceiling Slope:
Ceiling Slope

Most residential ceilings are horizontal (no slope or pitch) and use a round diffuser dome shape. However,
many SunPipe customers have sloped "cathedral" or "vaulted" ceilings. Standard SunPipe-13 diffusers will
work on ceiling slopes up to a 6/12 pitch. Ceilings in excess of 5/12 but less than 12/12 require our oval
shaped domes per the table below.

For Ceiling Slopes of:

Use this SunPipe-13 diffuser shape:

Horizontal to 6/12

Std. Round

6/12 to 8/12

8/12 Oval

8/12 to 12/12

12/12 Oval

Alternatively, you can allow the pipe to extend slightly below a sloped ceiling and use our round diffuser by attaching it to the pipe via a flange ring (sold separately). A small portion of the pipe may be visible but, painted to blend with the ceiling it looks fine.
The round SunPipe-9 diffuser dome works on ceilings up to a 7/12 slope.
The round SunPipe-21 diffuser dome works on ceilings up to a 2/12 slope.
